As We Wait... The final month has finally settled on us. The final days before the release of yet another addition to the EA Sports family. The memories and the experiences we had with FIFA 2000 will soon be leaving, as we look in anticipation for the newest, and we hope, the best addition to the FIFA family. In the reading ahead I will inform you on what to expect in the newest game in soccer gaming, and the most anticipated game, FIFA 2001. Let's start off with the key features.
- 17 World Leagues: England, France, German, Italy, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Scotland, Greece, Israel, Austria, Brazil, Korea and MLS. Not to mention 60+ National Teams.
FIFA 2000 also included 17 leagues, but the leagues featured here are a nice change of pace. Now we get a little taste of the Asian soccer style, with the Korean league. Of course the return of such leagues as England, Italy, and Germany, is always common in the FIFA Series. As usual, there is more arguements over the omissions of the, featured in FIFA 2000, Turkey league. Some have also argued over the Portugese league being left out. Other then that there are not that many glaring flaws in this catagory, but some my argue they should include more South American leagues, and some may argue they should include more Asian leagues and some may.....
- Commentary by John Motson and Mark Lawrenson Another feature in sound, is of course the commentary. Guess who's back! If you don't know by now, you won't hear the "lovely" sound of your favorite national commentary. I say lovely, with a very small emphasis. As most of the announcers have been, to say lightly - crap. It's only opinion, but most here in America would agree they would rather here John Motson then July Foudy in FIFA 2000. So, EA Sports have taken care of that. This year we will be graced with the likes of John Motson and Mark Lawrenson.
- Off field animation While some of us would have rather had the focus on the gameplay, it seems EA Sports has looked at every detail and has brought us some more cool effects. Now we can see the coaches and players sitting on the sideline, and the security and ushers standing in the aisles and on the sidelines. All these things, we hope they did just as well on gameplay. Dynamic Lighting/Weather changes in FIFA 2000 were few and far between. Basically if it rained, it rained. Well now, it could start out rainy, and end up bright and sunny. Another add-on feature in FIFA 2001. The clouds move, the field is effected by the weather, the sun rotates in the sky. So, don't always expect it to be raining the whole game, who knows, the soccer gods may just open up the clouds and bring out the sunshine for that final minute goal.
- New Sound Enviroment So, we've been told that we will get an "On Field" option in the game for sound. This means, we will hear the game of soccer in all it's glory. The grunting, the yelling at referees (Maybe taking some advice from Manchester United), the agony and pain of being injured on the pitch. Or you can go to the classical TV point of view, with the likes of Mottie commenting on your game. You can go to that nice sitting on your couch in front of your TV, on a Sunday afternoon feel, or the on the field approach. Either way, it's up to you.
- Internet Play OK, OK This one, well, I just don't believe it. EA Sports, internet play? Wow! Finally, our dreams have arrived. We will be able to play head to head against each other online. This one is too good to be true. Play against your friends, or play on a snowy US Friday night, while your opponent from Australia is sitting inside in his home on a Saturday afternoon, with his air conditioner blasting. The possibilities are endless with this internet play. We're going to be in a whole world of fun.
Other Mentionables:
- Consecutive Seasons - This was great in FIFA 2000, hope they have found ideas to improve it in FIFA 2001
- Motion Capturing - Numerous stars were found doing this for FIFA 2001, including Edgar Davids and Lothar Matthaeus
- New Set Plays - Maybe make your own? Let's hope for it.
- New AI - Well, hopefully they made it more realistic.
Well, from what EA has said. This game will be great. Although some people are mad at some of the things that have been left out. There are many other features. I am leaving out a few, the ones listed are just the ones I had comments on. Finally, there is one thing I'd like to say "Where are the Gameplay enhancements?".
