Press Release
July 10, 2000 - Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS) the world’s largest interactive entertainment software company announces that it has signed seven of Europe’s top footballers to be motion captured and used in the European promotion of FIFA 2001. The impressive list of players representing the best European talent in the sport includes Edgar Davids, Paul Scholes, Thierry Henry, Gaizka Mendieta, Puval Kuka and Shimon Gershon.
Motion capture is electronic scanning of the athlete’s actual motions and signature moves with infrared cameras. In previous years EA SPORTS have worked with a single International player for motion capture.
This year EA has gone six better by contracting the best local talent from the UK, France, Holland, Spain, Czech Republic and Israel and capturing them all in one place at one time.
The German football legend, Lothar Mattheus travelled to EA SPORTS’s Canadian studio to be motion captured in April.
Davids, Scholes, Henry, Mendieta, Kuka and Gershon gathered last week at the Gelredome Stadium in Arnhem, Holland to work with EA SPORTS and give their valuable advice on how EA can further perfect the game. Edgar Davids, the Dutch midfielder commented "Play FIFA 2001 if you love football."
"With this talent on board it only goes to show the lengths that EA SPORTS is prepared to go to make sure the product and game play are as real as they possibly can be and that our consumers are fully satisfied. FIFA 2001 is going to be the most outstanding football game ever, even more so than last year." - Frank Sagnier, Vice President of European Marketing for Electronic Arts.
EA SPORTS is in the unique position of having already developed games for the PlayStation 2. FIFA Soccer World Championship was released earlier this year in Japan where it reached number one in the software charts. Therefore, unlike many of its competitors this is second time round for the critically acclaimed EA SPORTS™ FIFA team.
FIFA 2001 will also be available on PlayStation®, PC and Game Boy® Color. A PlayStation version with it’s own unique feature set and online compatibility on PC are just some of the enhancements consumers can look forward to. More in-depth product information on these formats will be available in the near future.
